This project explores the letterboxing community on Dartmoor through the use of landscapes, portraiture and still life. Throughout this body of work I have explored the idea of mystery and the search for something by capturing quiet landscapes accompanied by portraits that captures the person looking but you can never fully see their face. This has also been accompanied by these studio like still life of the artefacts found within the letterboxes.
The letterboxing community originated in 1854, on Dartmoor and is an outdoor hobby that combines elements of orienteering, art and puzzle solving. Letter boxers hide small containers in public places and give clues to finding the boxes in printed catalogues. To this day we’ve seen many Dartmoor projects but none of this large community and it feels a shame not to share this activity to a wider audience photographically and in the end to give something back to the community.
